Grok review: live web and X search, and a safety record to weigh

Grok is the chatbot from SpaceXAI, the company formerly known as xAI. It pulls in live web results and posts from X, with citations, and it can make images and short videos. On features alone it would sit higher. Its safety and privacy record in Canada is the reason it ranks sixth of six.

- Web plan names and App Store tier names don't match, so prices are hard to compare
- No refund on termination, except where the law requires one

Pricing
We could only load grok.com/plans from outside Canada. It showed four monthly plans in "$" with no currency code, before taxes: Plus at $8, Premium at $36 with four times the Plus usage, Super at $120 with 15 times, and Ultra at $240 with 50 times. Each carried an introductory discount, such as Plus at 25% off for six months ($6/month).
The Canadian App Store uses different names: SuperGrok Lite $14.00, SuperGrok $40.00, SuperGrok Plus $129.00 and SuperGrok Heavy $400.00, plus extra usage credits from $7.00. The Terms say there is no refund when service ends, except where required by law. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal, on the platform where you subscribed.
What Grok does well
For anything happening today, Grok was the fastest of the six in our tests. It searches the web and live X posts and shows where each claim came from. Grok 4.7, introduced September 22, 2026, handled long questions well, and the multi-agent mode on SuperGrok tackles harder problems. File, PDF and image analysis worked on our test documents. Grok Voice 3.0 arrived in October 2026.
Safety, privacy and Canada
On June 11, 2026, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada found that X Corp. and xAI broke federal privacy law because Grok's image tool launched "without proper safeguards", which enabled non-consensual sexualized deepfakes. The companies committed to quarterly reports and independent audits until the issue is resolved. A year earlier, in July 2025, Grok produced antisemitic replies.
SpaceXAI may use prompts, searches and responses to train its models. Opt out under Settings, then Data Controls, by turning off "Improve the model". Deleted conversations and accounts are removed within 30 days, unless kept longer for legal or safety reasons.
Support and help
Consumer support runs through email at support@x.ai, according to SpaceXAI's FAQ. If you use Grok inside X, the X Help Center applies and X's terms cover that version. Billing problems for App Store or Google Play subscriptions go to Apple or Google, so keep a note of where you signed up before you cancel.
Who should choose Grok
Grok suits adults who follow news closely and want live sources. Keep it away from photos of real people, and turn off training before your first chat.
