Pi review: a free companion for conversation, with clear limits
Official site: pi.ai
Pi is Inflection AI's free chatbot for conversation, reminders and learning. Where the others act like research desks, Pi acts like a friend who asks follow-up questions. It is for adults only: Inflection's terms and the Canadian App Store listing both set the minimum age at 18.
What we liked
- Free, with no paid tier on any official page we checked
- Voice input and spoken replies on Android, iOS and the web
- Memory across chats that you can view and delete in Settings
- Reminders and to-do lists that Pi keeps track of for you
- You can opt out of model training in your account settings
What could be better
- A message cap for free users exists, but Inflection hasn't published the number
- No image uploads and no image creation
- You can't pick a model; Pi runs on Inflection-2 by default
- The app is listed in English only in the Canadian App Store

Price and the message cap
Pi costs nothing. In an August 26, 2024 blog post, Inflection wrote that it was "still committed to keeping consumer Pi available and free for anyone to experience". The same post said it would "begin to implement a cap on message volume for free users", without giving a number. In our month of use we never hit it, but heavy users should know the limit exists. The Canadian App Store lists Pi as free with no in-app purchases.
What Pi is good at
Pi is the best listener of the six. Ask it to help you think through a job offer or a hard conversation with a landlord, and it responds with questions before it gives advice. Replies are short and warm. Voice mode makes this feel natural on a phone.
It also handles small daily jobs: reminders, to-do lists, a Daily Brief, plus Learn with Pi and Draft with Pi activities. Where it falls short is anything involving files. Pi doesn't support images, so you can't upload one or ask it to make one, and Inflection doesn't say whether it searches the web. For research or work documents, use another assistant.
Privacy and your data
Inflection's privacy policy, last updated August 11, 2026, says conversations may be used for model training, and that you can opt out on your Account settings page. For Pi users, inputs are generally kept for at most 15 days after you delete them. The terms say outputs are retained indefinitely for limited purposes. Account and chat history can be deleted in Settings.
Support runs through the in-app "Help & feedback" link and a request form; there is no general support email.
Language support
The Canadian App Store lists the app in English only. Pi's Help Center says it "can handle quite a few languages" and switches when you type in another one, while warning that fluency and translation skills vary. French isn't named specifically. In our tests it answered in French without trouble, but Quebec users who want a French interface will be disappointed.
The company behind Pi
Inflection was founded in 2022 by Reid Hoffman, Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan. In March 2024, Microsoft hired the co-founders and most of the staff and paid $650 million to license Inflection's technology. Under CEO Sean White, the company launched Inflection AI Labs and a Pi Journeys experiment alongside a Pi update in July 2026, so the product is still moving.
Who should choose Pi
Choose Pi if you are 18 or older and want a calm voice to talk to, plus a few reminders. Skip it if you need files, images or answers with sources.
