How to choose a charting platform
A checklist built around the markets you trade, your devices and the real monthly bill once data is added.
We ran six charting and trading platforms through the same tests from a Canadian desk: real scans, real alerts and real data bills. These three scored highest.
Every platform goes through the same four-step routine, run by our editors from Canada with our own accounts. We track 14 criteria: 12 are scored from 1 to 10 in each review, and two are pass-or-fail checks on whether prices and cancellation terms are published.
We open a free account or trial with our own email and card, and note every price, add-on and renewal term the checkout shows. Nothing comes from a press kit.
On each platform we set up one watchlist of 40 US and Canadian symbols, three chart layouts and ten price alerts, then use it for at least 30 days.
We check which exchanges stream in real time, what TSX and TSX-V data costs, how quickly scans return and whether alerts fire during a busy open.
The 12 scores are averaged into the rating you see. Prices and plans are checked again before each update; the latest pass was on September 29, 2026.

Prices as listed on each vendor's site on September 29, 2026. Most vendors don't state the currency, so confirm it at checkout. Tickeron is shown at its regular price; it runs frequent sales.
Some vendor links on TickerBench are affiliate links. If you sign up through one, the vendor may pay us a commission at no extra cost to you. That money covers the subscriptions and data fees we pay during testing. It does not buy a better rank: every platform is scored on the same 12 criteria.
Scores and prices were last checked on September 29, 2026. We run a full pricing pass at least once a month and update a review sooner if a vendor changes its plans, data fees or trial terms.
Use a free tier before paying for anything. StockCharts is our pick for beginners: it runs in a browser, has a free plan and a first month free, and it is the only platform here that sells real-time TSX and TSX-V data ($9.95/mo). If you only look at US stocks, the free version of Finviz is another easy start.
No. We don't pass your name or email address to any vendor. When you follow a link, the vendor's site can see that you came from TickerBench, and from that point its own privacy policy applies.
Yes. Email info@chartcompass.org with the platform name and what you trade. We add a platform once it publishes its prices and we can test it from Canada for at least 30 days.
Each platform gets a score from 1 to 10 on 12 criteria, among them charting tools, scanning, Canadian access and value for money. The average divided by two becomes the rating out of 5. Two further checks, published prices and stated cancellation terms, are pass or fail.
No. Vendors can't pay to appear here, to move up the table or to read a review before it goes live. The order comes from scores alone, and the Featured badge simply marks the highest score.
At least 30 days per platform, with the same watchlist, chart layouts and alerts every time. Desktop software is tested on Windows and, where the vendor supports it, on macOS or Linux as well.
Three platforms stood out for different reasons. Pick the tab that matches where you are.
TC2000 had the most complete scanning setup in our test. EasyScan sorts the US market in real time on Premium and up, personal criteria formulas turn your own conditions into scans, and Premium+ tracks up to 1,000 alerts. The practice account is free and needs no credit card.
Join TC2000StockCharts runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install, and the free level covers the basics. It is also the only platform we tested with official real-time TSX and TSX-V data, sold as a $9.95/mo add-on.
Join StockChartsFinviz keeps it simple: a free version and one paid tier. Elite costs US$39.50/mo or US$299.50/yr, about US$24.96/mo on annual billing, and refunds are available on request in the first 30 days.

Risk warning. Trading stocks, options, futures, forex or crypto carries a high risk of losing money, and leveraged products can cost you more than you deposit. TickerBench reviews software only. Nothing on this site is investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell anything, so consider speaking with a registered adviser before you trade.
